Is MS going to fix Vista networking anytime soon? Let's face it. Vista can't
network execept maybe with itself, and for many, that's like owing a nice set
of silevrware but only able to use one spoon - and that has a hole in it.

A call to MVPs - setup a how-to get totaly rid of Vista and indstall XP.

Most computers now come infected with Vista - there must be a way to get
back to a working OS. How about it?

I can't wait for Vista SPxxx, Rev, xx.xx, Ver. xx.xxx - I need to get my
network back and operating at what was it's peak efficiency - so, what is the
best way to ensure Vista is fully renmoved and XP installed. Does MS offer
free XP packages for tose stuck without a network?

Have wired and wireless XP and Vista network
functioning great! Suggest you "RTFM" (read the friendly manual) - and,
tongue in cheek, the problem is often between the chair and the keyboard.

AJR, that's great you sound like one of the lucky ones
that has solved the issue. The RTFM suggestion
just didn't get the job done here either. IMHO.

Are you talking TCP application support, workgroup networking, active
directory enabled networking, or something else entirely?

I'd like to point out that there is no FM. Which is why everyone is jammed
on these discussion boards (which are pretty poorly designed and giving an
application error when you try to access your user information).

There are a number of Help functions built into Vista, but they are all so
general, and do not even begin to offer information for anyone having a real
issue.

It's like Windows tried to create an OS to rival Mac OSX, and instead they
wound up with one harder to use than Windows 3.1.

We have Vista networked with XP, 2000 and Server 03 - also with our
Macs (OSX) - no problems - any specific issue we can help you with?
Are you on a domain or dhcp?

There is an alternative how to disable IPv6:
"Disable IPv6" (DisabledComponents)

Also this is useful:
"Disable auto-tuning" (netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=off)

I only have a workgroup network of 4 machines and the internet is via a
wireless router. Once i got rid of all the extra services and protocols
my LAN and Internet speeds ran normal.

All i need now is the event ID 4226 patcher for Vista which i hope
llvlord realeases soon, so i don't reach my TCP/IP Concurrent
Connection Limits every 5 mins while using Bitorrents.

Do you what are the limits in different flavours of Vista? Here is a guess:

Here's the problem with Vista...

Ive read the posts and the problems with file sharing on Vista. The only
answers that MAY solve issues are by tech heads and the rest of us are
clueless. Vista should be a basic home user/friendly program. In the next
3-4 years, there will be MILLIONS of Vista users. They have to do something!

Ed43,

I appreciate yours, and all the other comments. I'm sorry you're
experiencing trouble. Vista is intended to be more secure. Just like your
home, when you start locking doors to keep strangers out, that makes the
simple things like coming and going more difficult -- requiring you to lock
and unlock.

In next weeks' MVP Summit, we will be presenting two talks on File and
Printer Sharing in Vista. One addresses WHY we made the changes we did, and
then asks for frank feedback on how we can improve the experience. The
second talk is a troubleshooting and How To talk.

We really want the feedback of our MVP's because we've learned it's of the
highest quality than most other feedback sources. We also want to encourage
dialog with all of our valued users on this newsgroup. We hope you're all
coming.

We're also honing our online Vista Networking Help articles. These are the
Manual. We hope these address all of the issues you're running into simply
and clearly. We want to work with you until they're right. The jump-off
point for them is
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/networking.mspx

Thanks again for your patience while we address these educational issues.

TBH i am happy with ms in all this. 1st of all they have this forum. which
yes is a faff to use but it is here atleast! 2ndly personally if i put my
experience of vista networking into proportion it was SO easy. I installed
belkin then plugged it in and i had internet as soon as i typed in the
password.- truly plug and play! the only problem was with my 3rd person
firewall! On xp i remember spending large amount of time on the phone trying
different codes and numbers in order to sort my on off connection. Sure there
are a few creases that need ironing out to make this more user friendly (such
as changing the workgroup name automatically or detecting what it needs to
be) but i found the info i needed on help menu. and the network and sharing
centre is pretty simple! 3rdly, if it gets too much i can sit back and fiddle
with my lovely new OS! Loving things like media centre and gadgets etc!

Good luck getting this sorted everybody, a few days ago i had to agree with
shell's first post. Still chuckling at it every now and again!

sam :)

Samski,

I agree that it is nice to have a forum. I have one for my camera, one for
my audiovisual, and now ne for my new OS. I also was able to get Internet up
almost immediately with my new wireless gateway notebook with Vista Premium.
I also was able to share files and folders of my XP wih my Vitsa immediately.
But it took 2 weeks of hours and hours of reading, and experimenting to get
XP to use file sharing fom my Vista. What I had to go through was ridiculous
and I'll bet that only a small percentage of people can duplicate this. It
is ridiculously complicated. Microsoft can't explain it either. I have yet
to read one suggestion my from Microsoft that matches what you really need to
do. This part of Vista is VERY flawed. Vista Premium is intended for the
run of the mill user like me. Most of us aren't IT people. Actually most
users have just average computer skills and use the computer for mainly
letter writing and Internet. The design team didnt prioritize the user
friendly aspect of this OS.

As you metion, it is pretty cool and has some fun stuff, they will need to
have a huge update for the user friendly part. I can't tell you how many
people on this forum recommend Networkmagic. This should light a fire under
Microsoft and get those designers working on this area.

Just my two cents...

Just to add that I have a wired LAN with 3 XP's. When you plug my new Vista
laptop into it everything works fine and I can see all of them including the
shared printer. When I try to use my Netgear Access point to link it
wirelessly it works fine providing you dont add any security. When you use
WEP etc you get a 'limited connection' whatever that means and I cant even
get out to the Internet. The system worked fine with my old laptop (XP). So
much for the 'added security' of Vista
