on my home & office machine as well as at least one friends it seems to
decide to hang up after someone logs on.

all of the machines as setup to have IM login on boot, and they do.

to the best of our knowledge nothing in the setup tells IM to disconnect
after a certain period of time.

yet they do. if you bring IM up to use it, often it will make you re-login.
my friends avator on my machine will say he is disconnected, yet if i call
him & tell him to re-login he says the machine shows he is logged in, until
he clicks on it. then it tells him he is no longer online.

many times at the office or at home i will be working and all of a sudden,
IM will tell me i am logged off that machine because i just logged in
somewhere else. but i didnt.

very strange.

anyone know if these are just things that happen.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I run my business from my home and rather than use the phone my clients all have Instant Messenger. It says I am logged in until I try to send a message and then it says you cannot send a message because you are not logged in. I have tried everything I can think of. I set the "set status to away" at 40 minutes. I have checked every option I can find and it still does it.
