I am planning to set up a home network between two
computers only. Both have a wired network card. One is
operating with XP Pro, and the other XP Home Edition. I
was told that I don't need a router, nor do I need a hub.
Is it true that I connect both computers only using an
ethernet wire between them? I have DSL service on the
desktop, and I want to connect my laptop.

Yes this is true, your pc's can be connected via a Cross
Over Cable this is not the same as a standard ethernet
cable and can be obtained from the same places. if you use
a cross over cable you do not need a hub or router.

Vee: To connect other PC's to the DSL service you can use ICS
(software) or a router(firmware). See:
http://ftp.aset.psu.edu/pub/ger/documents/Where95&NT.htm#Networking
under subtopic Internet Connection Sharing. Also see the "Alternatives to
ICS)
there.

You would not use a crossover cable for sharing the DSL service. But
for your information on crossover cables...
Actually you can get a Crossover Adapter which will work on any
CAT 5 (RJ-45) cable. You can buy one of these for less than $8.00 from
(e.g.): http://www.twstore.com/c5xover.html

For two computers, a Crossover cable (adapter) acts as though you were
using a hub (not a router).
