I have a CD drive and also a DVD drive on my PC (WinXP Home).
Is there a way to tell if they are set as Master or Slave without
dismantling to check the jumpers ?

I know that if you have Plextor drives you can run a free application
called Plextools Professional that will tell you how IDE optical devices
are jumpered. What I don't know is if the application will work with
other manufacturer's drives. But since it is free it probably wouldn't
hurt to download it and give it a shot. On the other hand opening the
case and taking a look might be even quicker.

Thanks for that John.
I downloaded Plextools Professional LE and ran it, but unfortunately it
appears
to work only with Plextor drives. But scanning the Help file, it looks a
very handy
utility. I think I may well go for Plextor drives in future, I don't know of
any other
drive manufacturer that provides such a utility.
I thought SiSoft Sandra Pro. might tell me jumper settings, but unless I'm
missing
something it doesn't appear to.
Guess I'll have to open the beast :-(

Magic! Amazing how dummies like me can overlook the obvious.

Thanks, philo

Sorry philo, a `torch` in England is a `flashlight` in the USA.

even though i was aware that in England a "torch" is a "flashlight"
I did not know you were English when you posted...and I thought you were
trying to be funny.
I always seem to mis-interpret things and see them in the most ironic
manner <G> !!!!
