Over the past year a number of "Widows Hotfixes" have
accumulated in my add/remove programs list as a result of
the numerous xp updates recommended as downloads
throughout the year. Is it safe to remove these updates
or does removing the update also remove the actual
updates to XP?

Tx,

Yes using Add and Remove Programs will remove the updated Hotfix and revert
back to the preupdate version. You can however remove these by first
deleting the uninstall backup from your \Windows directory.

Right click the Start Button and select Explore. From the open Explorer
window select Tools->Folder Options->View Tab and select the option to "Show
hidden files and folders". Apply and Ok out. You should now see a number of
hidden directories that look like this "C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$" or
"C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallQxxxxxx$" . You will see that these KB#s and Q#s
correspond with Hotfix #s in Add and Remove Programs. To remove the Hotfix
you must first delete the directory. Once deleted you can then click the
Remove button in Add and Remove Programs that corresponds to that Hotfix and
the entry will be removed from the Add and Remove Programs list.

Clear as mud ;-)
