Pretty new to this group, but I have been lurking for quite awhile now.
I just purchased an 80 gig external HD. Is it possible to install an
operating system on it ?
Not much room in my tower to add an internal HD and bracket, not even
much room to add the RAM, ribbons take up allot of room in there.
I have an W-XP Pro cd, and I would consider installing the OS there, if
at all possible. I'm running W-XP Home in my system now.

Windows XP cannot be installed on an external hard drive.

XP Pro will not do anything the Home won't, except it has a
few extra features in security and networking. But your
external drive probably can't be a boot drive. It would
need to be supported by the BIOS as a boot device and so
far, most BIOS do not support that option. Open your BIOS
and take a look. If the drive is USB or Firewire, look for
those options in the BIOS boot device list.

But you won't gain any performance. You could dual boot by
the method of leaving the BIOS to always boot the external
drive. If it was disconnected, it should then find and boot
the internal drive. But since the first boot drive must
hold the boot menu, you couldn't use the normal dual boot
menu AFAIK.

If you just want a bigger computer with room for expansion,
by a new case with power supply for about $100 and move the
components from the old, small case to the new one.
