Is it possible to replace a power supply fan?

My son's Antec 350 watt psu fan is as loud as our vacuum cleaner (slight
exageration - but only slight).
I have a couple of older 250 watt PSUs - can I just open one up and take the
fan out and trade it with the noisy fan?

Thanks,
Joe

Yes, you could do that, but the two PSU might use a different method
of fan power lead attachment to the PCB. Some are soldered on, others
use one of two predominant header sockets, pin-spacing. If you have a
soldering iron and heat-shrink tubing you can ignore all this, can
just splice the wires.

Assuming that the Antec fan is running at higher RPM due to temp
levels, you might decrease the lifespan of the PSU by reducing
airflow. If this is acceptible, then you might seek the temp senor in
the PSU and just move it away from heat sources, then the same fan
would have a reduced RPM-to-temp response.

Considering that your description of the replacement fan is from
"older 250W PSU", I would question wheither this replacement fan will
have adequate lifespan remaing for the new power supply. Considering
that a brand-new fan might cost $5 or less it might be worthwhile to
buy a new fan unless you've decided that the cost savings is a
worthwhile trade-off

yes it's pretty easy to do
i do it all the time...
i recently replaced one but had to resplice the wires as the polairty or
color-code
was reversed!

Sure it'll work, but is it a good idea to put an old fan in a new PSU,
when the fan is often the first point of failure anyway?

I'd get a new fan.
