Hi

Windows media player won't start, I keep getting this problem.
If I do a system restore it works again, but don't want to keep doing this.

Is it possible to reinstall Window Media Player on Vista, if so how and
where?

Thanx

Hi Uncle Nobby--

Vista won't let you reinstall WMP. Often WMP has very specific errors with
very specific fixes. Type "eventvwr.msc" in your run box without quotes and
click on "Applications" under Windows errors and see if you get any WMP
error at the time you open it up. If so, Post it.

You can also run SFC.

Type cmd in Search box>rt. click>run as admin.>at prompt type "sfc /scannow"
no quotes.

The box comes up but there is nothing called Windows Errors
You can also run SFC.

Got teh DOS box running, when I rt click there is no option to run as admin.

Have you tried Control Panel>Problem Reports and Solutions for an indication of
what might be causing your problem?

First click Check for new solutions, then View problem history, right click on
the problem and select View problem details and in the bottom right click Copy
to clipboard. Paste into a new e-mail and post here. NOTE: The Bucket ID is
the most important part of the problem report.

Got teh DOS box running, when I rt click there is no option to run as

Right-click on the Command Prompt shortcut, BEFORE Command Prompt is
running, and choose Run as Administrator. It will then show "Administrator:
Command Prompt" in the title bar of the Command Prompt window. Then type:

sfc /scannow

Press enter on your keyboard.

Also-- what's the value for:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, CLSID\{6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6}
\InprocServer32
on this system?

If it's working after a System Restore and then breaks again, that's very
strange in that it implies that something is consistently re-causing
problems/corruption here. Since I can't imagine that some action keeps
happening after every System Restore that is then breaking WMP -- does
rebooting without a Restore get WMP working again... ?

I have found out what the is causing the problem.
If I play Fifa 07 it seems to do something to WMP to stop it from loading.
So unless there is a solution it is either stop playing that game or use a
different media player.

Some more info, when it is doing the above I have found that if I right
click Media Player and tell it to run as Administrator, it loads up.
This is even when I am logged in as the Administrator.
Further, if I turn off UAC it then works by just clicking on it.
So whatever is happening it is affecting the UAC of Windows Media Player.

So wait - if you just run FIFA 07 it breaks WMP? Does rebooting set it back
to normal?

Since FIFA should be running as non-privileged, it shouldn't be able to
completely break WMP to the point of needing a Restore or that sort of
thing. It might be able to cause some sort of issue whereby WMP is hung up
somehow, but that's the only logical problem possibility I'd think of given
that data so far.

Speaking for myself only.
See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.

No, restarting Windows doesn't fix it, I have to do a Restore.
I have found taht if I right click the Windows Media Player and tell it to
Run As Administrator, it works, this is even when I am the Admistrator
anyway.
Also if I switch UAC off everything works ok, switch it back on and the
problem starts again.
The game seems to mess up with the Admistrator rights.

Uncle Nobby--

If you type eventvwr.msc in the run box, you will get the Event Viewer.
Sometimes it can help a good deal if it nails the error message. It's more
sophisticated in Vista, but regretably many of the events are not described
in language the ordinary user can decipher.

The good news on this thread is that you have Zach from MSFT contributing.
He is heavily involved in the production and development of WMP and if
anyone can help you Zach can.

Often when I have helped on numerous WMP problems, I've either used Zach's
website or I've used Chris Lanier's excellent information on the particular
WMP error in his list of fixes for errors on his blog. Google for Chris
Lanier's blog. \

Again Zach's advice will be a valuable help.

As to running SFC you did it wrong. Again type cmd in the Search box above
the Vista start button and when cmd pops up right click it>click "run as
admin" on the rt. click context menu> and at cmd type sfc /scannow.

Good luck and see what Zach has to say about this. A specific error would
help any of us.

Hi

Thanx for the reply

Ran the sfc scan program and it found nothing wrong.

I don't get any error numbers or warning or anything, it just doesn't load.

I have found out that the game Fifa 07 does something to prevent Media
player from opening, if I do a restore things run ok, but every time I run
the game the problem restarts with media player.

I have found that when the problem starts if I rt click the media player
prog and tell it to run as administrator it opens up as normal, this is
despite me being the administrator already.
If I turn UAC off everything works ok, turn it back on and the problem
starts again.

The game seems to be doing something to the admistrive rights that prevents
WMP from opening.

Does FIFA actually work on Vista according to EA?

http://footballcommunity.ea.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47939
is the only real information I saw there.

This prooooooooooobably is something you want to take up with EA.

Since it's corrupting your machine until a System Restore, that does imply
that there's discernible change to your system. That's hard for us in the
newsgroups to detect. Is it *only* running FIFA that causes the problem?
Was it already installed? If this was my system, I would probably start by
doing a windiff of the registry before-FIFA and after-FIFA. That's assuming
this is just because you're running FIFA. If it's due to a FIFA *install*,
that implies a lot more changes and actually kind of implies that something
may be wrong with FIFA that EA would likely be aware of.

Since it seems there that other people are having problems with FIFA, that
does imply that EA would be more aware of this area. If it was a solitary
issue just on your system, that would be more likely to imply some sort of
driver interaction.

So: at this point if I were you, I'd talk to EA and see what they know. Do
they have any interesting knowledge here?

Thanks for the reply.

The game wasn't already installed , I have done that.
It is only when you run it that it does something to WMP.

Interesting that your link to the Fifa 07 site there are lots who can't get
it to work, I don't have any problems in doing this.
I'll have a look on the site that you gave to see if there is a fix.
Other than that I think I won't run the game.

Thanx

That crash would be almost impossible to guess at given that almost all that
data is "0".

Have there been any more recent crashes?

Has this system been upgrade to Vista Service Pack 1 yet?

Do you have any recent crashes with WMP where the "fault offset" is **not**
0x00000000 ? Those would be much more useful. =)
