I am having so many problems with IE 6 (Windows XP Pro/Service Pack 2/All
latest updates installed). Can I just download a standalone version of IE 6
and reinstall it plus all of the service packs and patches that have come
out? If so how do I do this, I've tried searching the downloads pages and
can't find a standalone version of IE 6.

Thanks!

Did you update to SP2 or did the machine come with SP2?

Reinstalling IE solves very few problems. What problems are you
experiencing?

You might be infested with malware.

Frank--Thanks for your reply. I've been running XP Service Pack 2 since it
came out over a year ago and I always install the Windows updates the minute
they come out. I don't have any toolbars or other third party stuff
installed in IE. Unfortunately, my daughter and her friend downloaded a
virus on Friday. Norton caught and quarantined the infected file, but I
think I may have needed it to run IE properly. I was so scared by the
thought of having a virus on my machine that I deleted the stuff in
quarantine. At first I was getting a run-time error "5" when I started IE.
I worked and worked to fix this problem. I ran AdAware, Spybot, Microsoft's
spy program, Norton, CrapCleaner, PC Pitstop and PCRescue. Believe me there
are no bad things left on this computer. But now I'm afraid some good things
got wiped too. Every few minutes my IE freezes and the only way to recover
is to go into the Task Manager and cancel IE. It's really annoying because
it's hard to get anything done on the internet. Just a few minutes ago I
followed some advice I found on the Web to repair IE 6. I've got my fingers
crossed that this is going to work. If not, I'm afraid I'm going to have to
undertake a Windows XP repair or reinstall and I'm not looking forward to the
job. Unless, there is some way to reinstall only Internet Explorer, I'm
afraid I don't have any other choice.

Frank--Actually, I found a much easier way to do it on the internet. I just
found my "ie.inf" file on my computer, right clicked and told it to install.
I had to navigate to my Windows XP Pro installation CD for the corrupted
files to be replaced. Then I rebooted, ran Microsoft update and reapplied
missing patches. Several hours later all seems to be well and running
correctly. I didn't have to do any drastic things to my computer so I'm a
happy camper. Thank you for your assistance!

I thought I would report back with the hope that I might save another person
a lot of trouble. The ie.inf trick DID NOT WORK. So, I followed Frank's
advice to do a reinstallation of Windows XP. First, I uninstalled Service
Pack 2. Next, I tried to boot from the XP CD but I got an "illegal hardware
stop error." So, I ran a repair inside Windows XP. When I tried to
reinstall Service Pack 2 I got a stop error because I had Norton Internet
Security 2006 installed on my system. I tried to uninstall Norton but was
unable to do so because some required installer file was in the uninstalled
Service Pack 2. Now I had a big mess on my hands. Fortunately, Dell
includes a recovery partition on their computers so I was able to revert my
computer back to it's Out of the Box condition. A full 24 hours later, I am
now just wrapping up the reinstallation of all of my programs and files.
This has been a long, difficult learning process.

Bottom line, IF I ever get another virus--I'm going to revert back to the
out-of-box condition immediately and save alot of interim grief.
