Is it possible to look "inside" a setup file ...

.... so you'll know exactly what's inside it, before you resolve to install
it? And still better: the possability to copy just one single file from
the setup?
 
Many can be extracted. If you unarchiving program is incorporated into your
desktop context menu, right-click and see if you get an "extract" menu
option.

Already figured that out. But "file is not supported archive" is a very
common result. :(

One size won't fit all here. There are several different different types of
compiled installers.
Some are simply self extracting compressed archives (zip/rar/ace), you can
extract from these. Others use a proprietary routine which requires a
dedicated extractor, Installshield is of this type and runs through several
incarnations. There ARE command line tools to extract from Installshield
installers, you'll have to visit the underground scene to find them 'cos
they're not exactly mainstream. Google is your friend.

with wise instalation exe's you can run them from the command line followed by
/X to allow extraction
