My son set up this new pc I'm on, which sounds good but is not. I preferrered to set it up myself so I would know exactl
how this new one, which once again has Windows XP, was set up. I did'nt stand a chance, he went after it and wham bam, "here ya go Mom"
He's a real Wizard, I'm a beginner, and since I've had a computer he has always been in complete control. I'm alway
so busy trying to figure out what he's doing that I've never 'formally learned to used the thing, hence I miss a lot of steps that could have helped me get on despite the little hacker, but I know a little bit of this and a little bit of that..., I can't control the situation, my husband refuses, so it's divorce, forget computers, or learn to outsmart him
If you set the thing up, you are in control because you can set yourself up on Windows to be the 'Ghost Host' even thoug
it will show in user accounts that you or the owner is the administrator. A lot of what he does I have no idea how to fix, I just know that he can watch my every move, find any password I enter, has been malicious, a thief, and I'm to the point of giving up
I'm not a bad mother, quite the opposite, and did not raise him to use his intelligence to become a horrid person. Sorry
I'm venting instead of sticking to my computer problems
Does anyone know any threads to places that would lead me to the root files Not the registry and also be able to get his name off and mine on?

Make sure your son is not around, boot from the XP CD, when the installation
screen appears tell it to reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows.
You can then put in your info and set it up as you want. When that is done -
don't let him hang around as you're doing anything on the computer until you
learn everyhting about it you want to.

Hi,

If his name is set for Documents and Settings, you will need to create
another profile to change that. If you prefer not to copy the old profile,
do just that: Create another profile.

As per passwords, no matter if you format/re-install or not, create another
profile with a password or not, he or anyone else can gain access to that
information, in less than 2 minutes.

Other than that, there is nothing to be gained nor learned via an initial or
new install. Good luck!

I'm not entirely sure how this is done and perhaps you could ask one of the MVPs, but unless I am mistaken you can enter a BIOS password. If you know the make and version number of your BIOS then one could go to the manufacturers site and get the information on how to password protect the BIOS. This would mean that the machine would not even boot until the BIOS password is entered and there won't be any resources to access and break the code as the BIOS is needed to load before even the OS will boot. So the answer would be to password protect the BIOS and then lets see the little darling get into your system. LOL. Good luck.

Hi,

While it sounds like a good idea, it's not as long as someone has physical
access to a machine. A BIOS password is easily cleared, usually by switching
a jumper temporarily or briefly removing the CMOS battery. Information about
resetting virtually any BIOS password is readily available.

Frankly, it's impossible to completely secure a machine against intrusion if
one has physical access to it.
