I closed a document without saving in error. Is it possible to find it on my
hardrive. It was a long document.

If you simply closed it and did not take specific steps to delete it,
then it is still where it was and in the state it was before you edited
it. (I think.)

However, if you deleted it, it is probably in your Recycle Bin. Look
for it there and restore it. Good luck and let us know.

If you never saved it, there is nothing to retrieve. As Jack Gillis says, if
you had ever saved it before, then the previously saved version is still
intact.

===> Might it not still be there in a temporary file? Just
curious. Not sure how one would look for it though; sounds
pretty tedious. What is Fast Save was turned on?

If a document is closed normally, the temporary file that Word creates is
deleted automatically.

Turning on "Allow Fast Saves" will not make any difference and with the
speed of most modern computers is not necessary and in fact is not to be
recommended because it can lead to corruption of documents.
