Is it impossible to REALLY remove IE from Windows?

I did a fresh installation of Windows 2000 Pro + SP4 + Rollup_1_Ver_2.
After installation, I found that IE 5 is included. I tried to remove it
using Control Panel-> Add/Remove Programs ->Windows Components
(in order to install IE6.1).
As a result, it's icon disappeared from the desktop and the program
disappeared from the list of installed programs when you select
Control Panel-> Add/Remove Programs.
I also installed Firefox and set it up as the default browser.
But, when I clicked on a file of type .XML, I was amazed to see
that it was opened by IE5.
So it appears that IE was not REALLY removed and that the OS
was bluffing.

Anybody knows what is going on with removing IE?

Thanks,
David

Way too many programs use the libraries for IE to render HTML documents.
For example, HTA (HTML Applications) would require the IE libraries to
exist. Uninstalling IE merely removes the common links to it, not the
files for it. If you want something else associated with a filetype
then go change the association to whatever program that you want to use,
like XML Notepad 2007, for example.

You can just install IE 6 on top of 5.

You cannot remove IE safely. There are some people who provide
procedures to do so, but if you follow the procedures, Windows goes
unstable.

No, do not even try to un-install any of the IE programs...everything is
piggy-backed, it will mess up your sytem...it is part of the OS, there are
programs that are dependent on these files...and your system will
crash...only leading you to do a full re-install of your OS..which will
re-place all of these programs from the start...so you will only be walking
in circles...
