I've up-to-date virus protection - but my pc keeps shutting down - or it
looks that way - the monitor goes blank, but the pc is actually still running
- I have to hold the on/off button in for several seconds to get it to switch
off. Also - it seems almost always to happen when I touch the mouse.

Any ideas?

"when you touch the mouse.."

So - you cannot use this machine hardly at all?

When you say your screen goes blank, is it black and do you have hour timer
on the screen. You may have gone into standby mode, check your power
settings and put standby mode on never, also go into control panel and check
your mouse settings.

Hard to say, but possibly malware or at least adware, or file
corruption to name a few.

Can you press CTRL-ALT-DEL when the screen blanks like that? IF
you can get to the Task Manager you can get an idea of what might
be going on.

Virus protection isn't enough these days: You also need a
software firewall minimum, hardware firewall or both even better,
plus adware/malware tools, a minimum of three of them, to have a
hope of keeping your machine clean. And then of course you have
to practice safe hex, as they like to call it.
If you don't have any of those, and want them, ask; lots of
recommendations can be made.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Sometimes it runs for ages and other times it won't even boot up.

Thanks - do you think a system recovery is in order?
