Hello,

I got a call from one of my users yesterday complaining
that their computer was running very slow. When I
arrived at their desk, CPU utilization was at 100% and
the AntiSpywear was the culprit. The copy running on
this desktop was the version that expired at the end of
July and the icon in the taskbar displayed that the
service was disabled. Just wanted to point this out in
case it hasn't been already.

Thanks

The 100% CPU usage is not necessarily correlated with the expiration. I had
Microsoft Antispyware on a virtual PC expired when I started the VPC
yesterday, and had no trouble updating it to an unexpired version, via the
download center.

I believe that once you end task the processes that are dragging the machine
down, and download a current version from the download center, and bring the
definitions up to date via File, check for updates, that the user should be
fine.

It may also be wise to check errors.log in the Microsoft Antispyware install
folder. I would delete this file if it is of any significant size at all.
If it is at 4 gigs, definitely delete it!

The high CPU usage symptom has come up through the beta--it can be
associated with a variety of things--maxed out errors.log and the definition
update process--either auto, manual, or upon program startup.

It is unfortunate that once the program expires, you (it) cannot respond to
the blue prompt that a newer version is available. You must go to the
download center and download the new version directly. It will upgrade over
the expired version.
