Is ISA slot suported by XP?

I have a SCSII card on an ISA card which connects my CD writer and my scanner. It works under ME upgrade from 98SE. However, I've done a complete new install of XP Pro but these connections are not being picked up. Does anyone have advice regarding this? Thanks kindly.

Mike, go to the Card Manufacturer's web site and see if they have WinXP
drivers. Or go to
www.driversguide.com

XP supports ISA, although I believe that XP won't autodetect ISA devices
(even Plug&Play ISA).

If there are drivers, you ought to be able to manually install them. For
example: I used a "Zip Zoom" card, which was really an Adaptec legacy ISA
card (AHA 1502E, maybe). I was able to go through the XP hardware wizard and
install the Adaptec AHA-151X drivers manually. XP may include drivers that
are compatible with your SCSI adapter, or its manufacturer may have some.

(My current system has no ISA slots, so I replaced the SCSI Zip drive with
an internal IDE version.)

Your other options would be: finding a PCI SCSI card, or replacing the
scanner and burner. (Unless they're high-end stuff, you may be pleasantly
surprised by the prices of USB devices that will have better performance
than the old ones.)

Address altered to avoid spam. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

There's no auto-detect of ISA devices ... because they are ISA which is
a really old hardware standard long before Plug-n-Play[/Pray] ever
appeared. You'll have to install the drivers for that device.

You may need an XP driver for that card, but yes, XP will handle ISA slots
just fine. I've done it, on XP Pro. In my case the card was an ISA Sound
Blaster card. It was recognized immediately without requiring a new driver.

You'll need to contact the manufacturer of that SCSI card to
obtain WinXP-specific device drivers, and manually install them.
WinXP does allow the use of ISA cards, but doesn't provide any "plug &
play" support for them.

Hi Bruce:

My ISA Sound Blaster sound card was recognized automatically. I did not have
to install a driver manually. Just curious as to this apparent acceptance of
the card as PNP. Or was it just the default driver that was installed? I
don't have access to that computer now. So I can't check, but the sound
works fine.

Your best bet may be to find a resonably current PCI scsi card, with
the right flavor of SCSI connectors, on ebay, but first, consider that
you can buy a good IDE cd writer for $40 (newegg) and a nice USB
flatbed scanner is $70 (best buy), both with XP drivers and modern
application software. (if you have a very fancy scanner you are on
your own.)

Before you proceed with SCSI, Do the burner and scanner have XP
applications avaiable ?

How old are the scanner and burner ? Some of these had real crappy
SCSI interfaces and may not be happy on a modern controller, even if
it should work on paper.

It must be that WinXP can recognize _some_ common PnP ISA devices,
after all. I was speaking more from my own experiences with my ISA
sound card and modem when I was first testing WinXP, then from any
certain knowledge of WinXP's design parameters.

So I can't check, but the sound works fine.

Windows 2000/XP will auto-install for some of the most common ISA legacy
devices. The Soundblaster was the de facto sound card for a long time
by lots of users so it is one of those searched for. It may also
support an old Adaptec SCSI host adapter, but Mike's SCSI card is
probably some low-grade minimal SCSI-3 card that doesn't even have the
brand stickered on it.

My aunt has an ISA SCSI card that came with a scanner and there's
nothing on it to identify the maker or model. Trying to find the
installation media (which install an entire software package and does
NOT provide access to just the driver) would be like hunting through the
city's trash dump; she is a monster packrat and extremely sloppy. The
software for the scanner won't install under Windows NT/2000/XP and they
don't have an updated version (it's an unsupported model, but, Christ, I
can still get software and drivers for my 6-year old HP ScanJet IIcx
from HP and Windows XP has embedded support for it). So we're going to
move the scanner to an old box running Windows 98 simply because there
is no way to determine who made the SCSI card to then check if there is
anywhere online to get a driver for it.

Apparently the SCSI card included with the CD-RW drive that Mike got is
not recognized in Windows XP's list of most common legacy devices.

<snip>

By the way, haven't you ever noticed that during the install of Windows
that it loads (or attempts to load) dozens if not hundreds of drivers
for which you obviously do not have that hardware? It loads the driver
and checks if it found a device supported by it. Microsoft doesn't know
how to detect all that hardware but the device makers have drivers that
can identify their own stuff.

Mike,

"USB(port) -> SCSI(device) cable" may be helpful for you.
PS: It is actually an adapter.
PS: You might also need a "SCSI 1 - SCSI 2" adapter.

Have you tried using the Add Hardware wizard, let it run through the plug and play part then you
will get the Is the device connected page, select yes it is connected. On the next page scroll down
to Add a new hardware device and let it search or do manual install.
