Is ie6 with all updates (Not the XP sp2 version) a safe environment?

My 8 year old son, likes to visit a lot of the sites
that deal with kids console games, looking for info, cheats,
etc.
These site operators have no shame at all, and they are constantly
trying to run their bogus activex, update the home page,
goodness know what else.
I told my son not to say OK to anything, but it still
bothered me.
I've now installed mozilla firebird 93 and he's using that.
I'm not sure if it's just perception, but it *feels* safer.

For IE change the settings in internet options>security to this

Download signed active x controls>set to prompt
Download unsigned active x controls>set to disable
Initialize and script active x controls not marked as safe>set to disable
Run active x controls and pluggins>set to enable
Script active x controls marked safe for scripting>set to enable
Java permissions>set to high
Launching programs and files in a IFRAME" > Prompt
Installation of Desktop items"> Prompt
Navigate sub-frames across different domains>prompt

Since IE the the most widely used browser those activeX controls that are
trying to download are designed for it. Firebird although not perfect should
be a bit safer
as for as activeX goes.
