I have a one year old Dell XPS 420 with Vista Ultimate. A friend told me to
wait until all the kinks are worked out before I download IE8. Is it easy
and safe to download without causing all kinds of problems?

Install it. If you don't like it or have problems you can uninstall it.

Why would I want to download IE from anywhere else but Microsoft update?

Besides, why I would even WANT IE8?

I only use IE because Netflix won't use Firefox.

Yes It Is Ready 4 You 2 Install It, Your Friend Is Just Giving You Bad Info,
Because Microsoft Has Not Been Releasing Service Packs 4 Internet Explorer
Dating All The Way Back 2 IE 6 Service Pack 1.

Support 4 IE 7 Will Expire Exactly 1 Year After IE 8 Was Released. That
Means That Some Time Next Year Mainstream Support 4 IE 7 Will Be Retired.
