Is Epson trying to take over Lexmark's place ?

I don't know if this is occurring in the US or just in Canada, but Epson
is now selling a fairy wide selection of their printers for between zero
and $49 here with the purchase of a digital camera, a computer etc.

It's pretty much a give away, I suppose hoping to cash in on ink sales.

I think, basically, they're all doing it. In this week's Future Shop
circular I see an HP 7850 for $39 CDN. How much does the ink cost for
such a unit? Probably double that. Yeah, I'd call it a potential ink
sale promo by HP. It's so blatantly obvious because you NEVER see the
inks themselves for 1/2 price or less. If they did, people would buy a
dozen cartridges and never pay full price again. Much like I do with
certain grocery items, buying several when they're on sale. Printer
companies put all kinds of crazy security devices on new cartridges and
then come begging for a printer sale by dangling a printer at half price
in front of our noses, like a carrot on a stick. Well, this "rabbit"
isn't moved by their lame marketing efforts. Eh, what's up, Doc? . . .

There is nothing new about that. Low line printers have sold for low prices
for years. I bought a second R200 once because it was half the price of the
cartridges that came with it. And Lexmark (Dell) is the only printer I have
found that does not supply full cartridges. Shop around for cartridges. Sams
Club has full sets for my R200 at about 60% of retail.

Glad to hear you are sticking to Epson carts for an Epson printer.

Here in Oz, just before last Xmas, the Australia Post Shops had a
special on offer -- free printer with two sets of HP ink cartridges.

Cheers, Phred.

I have never before in Canada seen Epson offer this type of bundling
where it brings the printer price down to zero of $50 before. Lexmark
did this for years where just about every computer related product you
bought came with a "free" printer after rebate. I also have seen
similar deals with HP although mainly with their low end line up.
However, this $100 cut on a number of medium and low end Epson printers
seems to be new here.

Yep. Here in Scotland a buddy went in to buy a colour cartridge, saw
printers on a bargian sale (complete with both black & colour
cartridges) at £24.99. His required colour cartridge was there at £28.
The obvious choice was made.
