Is DFS advisable is this situation?

Hi All,

I have 2 locations connected by a 512k line, and I think DFS would be great
on the file servers. I have never set up DFS before so I am not clear on
somethings:

Is DFS advisable in my situation, where the networks are connected by a slow
WAN link? Or DFS works best when the servers are on the same network?

Can you control the timing of the replication?

If I am performing a backup, and I only want to backup the files on a
particular share, but that share is part of a DFS topology, can I isolate
that share? Or would my backup include the entire DFS?

Best regards,
Sam

regarding the link speed, it realy depends on how much traffic is on it, and
how much data you need to replicate, meaning how many changes are made.
the replication is set up to replicate in time intervals you can change, and
also in time and day intervals you specify.
have a look at technet, a quick search found

regarding your backup, you can backup your shares wich will still be there
as before, just as you used to, or you can use the dfs to access everything
at once.

if you have alot of write activity in the share, the dfs replication might
not be for you, especially if people are writing in the same files, at the
different locations, but its great for sharing more static files, and making
different shares replicated and available at different locations.

remember to use the replication feature you need to use domain dfs.
