Hi Beemer,
Windows optimizes the hard disk when the system us kept idle.
Description about this feature, as shown in Tweak UI screen:
"Optimize hard disk when idle" check box allows Windows to rearrange files on the hard disk when the computer is not in use to improve performance.
If you don't want this feature, you can disable the auto-optimization feature using Tweak UI. Download/Install Tweak UI and run it. Look in the General section, and uncheck "Optimize hard disk when idle".

Ramesh,
Yes this is what happens. I thought that Windows defrag only runs when done
manually? I have no task set to do this. Please advise.
Beemer
Hi,
Yes! dfrgfat.exe and dfrgntfs.exe - both are Windows system files.
Does it run only when the system is kept idle for some time?

I have Diskeeper 2007 on my desktop which has a LAN on which my laptop is
connected. Both computers are running XP SP2.
Diskeeper is not installed on my laptop but my laptop does have dfrgfat.exe
in \windows\system32 and this program frequently runs all by itself.
Is dfrgfat.exe also part of Windows XP SP2?
rgds,
Beemer
