is defender on ???

Hmm - I believe the default on XP is now to show the tray icon at all times.
However, if you don't see the notification area icon, you can run the
program, via start, run, all programs, windows defender, and go to tools,
options, and scroll down. You will eventually find an option to show the
icon all the time.

Alternatively, you can hit ctrl-alt-delete and start task manager, and look
for msascui.exe and msmpeng.exe in the processes tab.
