I notice that I have something called FamilyKeyLogger, a.k.a.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exe, running on my PC at home. It's
apparently a content index service published by Microsoft. On
searching for information about this, I find there's some spyware,
published by http://www.spyarsenal.com/, also called FamilyKeyLogger.

I've run Ad-Aware and Windows Defender (Beta) on my pc, and neither of
them think anything's amiss. Nor does Anti-keylogger 7.1, which I've
just downloaded.

Is FamilyKeyLogger a.k.a.C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exe a bona fide
component of Windows XP home edition or should I be worried?

As far as I know, Anti-keylogger doesn't scan system for key loggers,
but blocks all ACTIVE files that start logging keystrokes. Don't blame
it for not finding that cisvc.exe - it could be just sleeping and
performing no activities. We have Anti-keylogger at our office and
never experienced any problems.

Yes it is. If you do a Google search it will show you that it's a "monitoring
program for XP indexing".

Thanks. I was more puzzled than anything else, since I've certainly not
installed the thing and no one else has access to the PC (well, my
cleaning lady, I suppose).

Further research suggests that 'cisvc.exe is a Windows System File and
should be in a system directory [which it is]. If it is then this
application is safe.' http://process.networktechs.com/cisvc.exe.php

This is confirmed by Audit My PC.com:

'The cisvc.exe will monitor the memory usage of the Content Index
Service (CIDAEMON.exe). If the content index service begins to use too
much memory, cisvc.exe will terminate it so that it does not impact of
the computer's performance.

'cisvc.exe is flagged as a system process and does not appear to be a
security risk. However, removing Content index service may adversly
impact your system.

'The Spy Bot database currently registers cisvc.exe to Microsoft.

'This is part of Microsoft Windows.'

so I guess I was being unduly suspicious.
