is a dual 1.2Ghz faster than a single 2.6Ghz machine?

Hi all,

I'm running the free VMWare server on a desktop-class PC with a 2.6Hgz
AMD processor.

I've been offered an old HP dual 1.2Ghz server. All else being equal,
would the twin processor give better performance (even at less than
half the speed) that the single 2.6Ghz unit?

Cheers,
Scott

I would have some thought that it might actually be faster, even
though your current chip is 2.6Ghz which IS greater than (2 * 1.2),
the increase would come from having two PARALLEL lines of execution,
if the FSBus speeds of the 1.2 ghz chips were equal to the FSB of
your 2.6GHz chip then YES they probably would be faster, if they have
a slower FSB rating than the 2.6GHz then I would say keep your 2.6GHz
