Trying to decide which graphics card I should buy to upgrade my current
system with

P4 3,4Ghz model 650
2GB RAM
Ati X550 Video card with 256 Mb

My MB does not allow any more modern CPUs so was thinking to upgrade my vid
card instead with supporting more modern technologies. I do not game a lot
so do not need top of the line stuff. However I want to have passive cooling
and want to run HD videos, vista UI, graphics software etc without a glitch.
I have been looking at 7600 GS and X1600 pro based cards but am not sure if
buyiung the 512 MB versions will be worth the extra money since I do not
game.

I appreciate any advice!

If you don't game, then there is no reason to change your video card as
long as that particular one is supported by ATI with drivers that work
with Aero. If it won't support Aero, then buying a new card with 256MB
of RAM will be just fine.

No, 512mb is not needed for Vista AERO interface and is only useful in a
small handful of games even. 256mb card will do you fine.

FX5200 w/128M runs Aero on a 1.5G RAM system just fine.
Getting drivers seems to be the issue (Currently using the Beta WDM
drivers supplied from Microsoft).
