Is 255 characters in a cell the max?

After 255 characters (text) in a cell in Excel 97, the cell only displays a
row of ####. If I double click the cell the text will appear but as soon as
I move to another cell the pound symbols are displayed. I can't print the
sheet with the text showing. Doesn't matter how I resize the cell.
The Excel book says 255 characters are the max allowed per cell. Can this
limitation be changed?

Mike,

I posted the same message the other day
under "Miscellaneous" and have just read the replies.
Although I haven't tried it yet, I was told to try to
change the cell format from text to general. Hope it
helps. Or you'll just have to be more parsimonious.

xl97 supports up to 32k characters in a cell.

Try changing that cell's format from Text to General.
