Irritated by avi files

I'm getting irritated by the fact that the only avi files I can view on this
computer or my laptop are avi files that came pre-installed with windows.
 
Well have you installed the correct codecs for AVI files that are not
included in Windows? With which codec are they encoded (compressed)?
