Irratic Cursor

Regularly I seem to lose control over my cursor. It runs 'wild' all over the
screen automatically opening and closing programmes and selections. I can
sometimes get it to stop by initiating Windows Task Manager, but it is not
always 100% succesful.

I have run full Antivirus checks with AVG with latest updates and also Sybot
with latest update. They all confirm my system clear although it appears to
be a 'virus' based problem to me.

Can anyone suggest what is wrong? Of note my video card is NVIDIA GeForce2
MX/MX 400 with driver nv4_mini.sys 12 March 2004. I have downloaded the
update for NVIDIA from WINDOWS UPDASTE but the installation always fails.
Could this be a factor?

Certainly a wild script / program running in the background could easily
cause that kind of behaviour.

Call up Task Manager and close any instances of wscript.exe running, if any.

A program like autoruns can help you to examine startup programs and help
you to remove
any unnecessary / suspicious programs (search on Google until you can
recognize each one)

Does the problem happen in safe mode?

If not, perform clean boot troubleshooting.

If yes, I'll be you $$s to doughnuts that you have a virus
missed by AVG.

I have not run for any period of time in safe mode but I will try and see if
the problem exists there. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have run autoruns and cannot identify any wild or unknown programme. I will
check Task Manager next time it occurs to look for wscript.exe as you suggest.
Thanks for suggestions so far.

Unless you had any specific problems with the original NVidia video drivers,
and have a copy of the original NVidia Video drivers on disk, you could try
reinstalling / rolling back the video drivers to the original ones eg via
Device Manager / System Restore. Could well be a problem with the NVidia
update itself.

Here's an idea (and yes i do realise that it is not a technical one) remove
your mousemat and try the mouse firstly on the top of your desk directly and
if that doesn't work try putting a plain sheet of A4 paper in between it and
your desk....let me know if this works :) you may be surprised
