I have just recently started replaying starcraft and i often get the blue
screen of death with this message:
"irql not_less_or_equal"

Any way of stopping it, short of buying an old pc?

I am currently running xp.I do have another PC witnxp64 bit, but I would
guess that would fall over more.

I could not find any details elsewhere which is why i have posted on this
forum.

Please, only constructive answers on this topic. I want an rough idea what
could cause this (drivers, specific codecs, etc).

It's probably a driver, but it's not easy to tell which one. Microsoft
offers this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;818501

Good luck with that.

For quite awhile I was getting this stop error whenever my system tried
to renew its ip address. It might just have been coincident, but the
problem went away when I moved the location of the pc, and connected
directly to my gateway router, instead of being behind a switch.
