IRQL not less or equal + Blue Screen

All of a sudden the error "IRQL not less or equal" along
with a Blue Screen of death has started. I've not
installed any new hardware.

Then, spasmodically, the screen goes dark and the machine
just turns off. Is this sufficient to give anyone any
clues as to what's wrong?
