Hi all........ just upgraded to version 3.98 and now I can no longer
play MPG files. It gives an error message saying windows cannot play
this file. Nothing else has changed on my system so why is this
happening. I never had the problem before upgrading. I can give the
entire error message if that is necessary.

Did you download and instal all the latest plugins?

See http://www.irfanview.com/ then click on plugins on the left side

Page <http://www.irfanview.com/plugins.htm> states:

Note: A normal IrfanView version includes the following
(most important) PlugIns:
Effects, Icons, Mpg, Slideshow-EXE and Video.
According to what I read on the website no plugins are needed to
play mpg files. I'll check it out again.

In the GUI it has "*" next to MPG which indicates plugin needed.
From what version do you upgrade? Current Mpg.dll is v3.97 (?)

G'day mates,

A week or two ago there was comment that the new 3.98 had a bug or two
and the solution was to download version 3.98g (g for German?).

Does anyone know if there is now a corrected english version
available?

The home site <http://www.irfanview.com> only refers to 3.98 and the
"History" does not mention any bug fix for it yet.

Cheers, Phred.

Yeah, thanks for that link, mate. Actually, I found that discussion
last night, before I asked my question here. Call me paranoid, but I
have trouble seeing why a third party should have the "fix" but the
author has not added it to his homepage -- or, indeed, made any
comment one way or another about it. Hence my query here.

Also, I note someone else there commenting about a problem DLL:
"IrfanView can't load PlugIn: "EFFECTS.DLL""
which nobody there seems to have answered as yet.

I think I might wait awhile. 3.97 has one irritating bug that I'm
aware of; but I'm aware of it, so I'll stay there for the time being.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Cheers, Phred.

Downloaded all plugins and still have the same problem. Guess I'll drop
irfan view and try something that works.

I have been using 3.98 (English) since its release (with WinXP)and have
not experienced any of the mentioned "bugs." I wonder if they don't have
more to do than those users' systems than with Irfanview . . .

The damned thing has Google desktop shit incorporated in the install
package, as the default option, probably a form of freeware
sponsoring. STGM. What will they thing of next, I wonder.

Irfanview is well worth persevering with.

Have you tried emailing the author?

(e-mail address removed)

I have found him quite helpful the couple of times I have done so.

Or you could post a message on his forum board at:-
