Checking for virusses and worm at an online service I
discovered that there is an IRC Trojan in
C:\WINNT\system32|ServicePack1\msgtovtr.bat.
This in spite of using a recent version of Norton,
probably due to chatting (my partner lives in the US, I
live in Europe).
Can't get into system32 far enough to remove the worm.
Two questions:
1)how can I get rid of the worm?
2) how can I prevent catching this one again or another
one?
Please notice that I'm a grandmother of 60+ and not very
good at PC's.
Please help!
Thank you.

I know everyone will hate reading this but the best idea
is scratch norton and get something that works. Two
incredibly better products are PC-Cillin, or the server
version of it, from www.trendmicro.com (and they have a
free online scan tool too), or Panda Antivirus from
www.pandasoftware.com.

I have had any number of viruses that Norton wouldn't
catch that PC-Cillin would, but that is just my experience.

Instructions and possibly a removal tool for removing that virus can
be found by going to the web site of the software that detected the
virus [or www.sarc.com for Norton information, though they are not
guaranteed to use the same virus names] and looking up the exact virus
name found in their virus encyclopedia.

Norton Antivirus, like most any antivirus, requires updates every week
or so or else it quickly becomes useless. There is a way to configure
Norton / Live Update to download updates weekly automatically, I
recommend this. You should update Norton using the LiveUpdate button
within the Norton Program or by going to www.sarc.com, and if it
detects but cannot remove the virus, go to the virus encyclopedia at
www.sarc.com for removal instructions and support.

www.grisoft.com is free antivirus if you prefer that.

If the | in the virus name you gave below is really a ":" colon, then
the virus may be using NTFS Streams / NTFS Alternate Data Streams to
hide. Many antivirus programs have trouble detecting viruses in NTFS
Streams and using a different or newer antivirus program or
complaining to the manufacturer may be necessary.

Microsoft offers free help with viruses. The phone number is
866-PC-SAFETY in the US.
