is there software (for windoze) that'll let me host my own irc server
locally on my own network (with limited access through the net but
still use Miranda or mIRC?)?

btw, what's the last free version of mIRC for Windoze ?

Those links are native IRCd's (IRC servers):

http://wircd2k.sourceforge.net/
http://www.storer.net/ircd.html

But they're too damn outdated. I think that you could use Cygwin to
compile and run under Windows one of the IRCd's available for UNIX.

None, I think that mIRC was always shareware.

There are more. Your only problem seems to be choosing which one you
like.

Perhaps your recall does not date previously to mIRC v4.1.

You're probably going to be way better off using Linux for this sort of
thing. Any lying-about PC, free, or cheapo second-hand desktop should
do for the purposes.

Take a look at Freecycle for where you may be able to get a free desktop:

Then why not bung in a decent Hard Drive and use it as a file backup
machine, too. Lovely jubbly.

Ubuntu are even doing a nice little server edition:

You can try bIRCd.. Still under development ;)
