BTW what happens to mIRC after the 30 days evaluation period?
Does it stop working?

If you want a good, no-frills IRC client, the one that comes with Miranda IM
works great.

Nothing other than the annoying its over your 30 days popup, the client
itself doesn't quit working, it just lives up to its shareware name.
