I'm trying to run a multiplayer game which requires IPX
network connection. I have a Win 98 and Win XP machine
connected through a switch. The network works and both
machines are able to access the internet and each other
but not when it comes to playing the multiplayer game. I
have installed the IPX protocol on Win98 and done similar
with the XP machine also (this has a slightly different
name) with no luck. What am i missing?

Thanks,
Jesse

I have somewhat the same setup here, and it works ok
On Win98:
Add IPX protocol
On Properties for IPX protocol under advanced tab
Frame Type = Ethernet 2
Network address = 101(All Machines must be the same)
Under (Tcp)Bindings: make sure if you have shares, that you uncheck the
"File & Printer Sharing for TCP, Sharing can be done through IPX Securely,
since this protocol will not be visible from the internet.
On WinXP:
Add IPX protocol
On Properties for IPX protocol
Internal Network Number = 123(can be anything, but every XP machine must be
different)
Frame Type = Ethernet 2
Network Number = 101 (All Machines must be the same)
Disable Sharing for TCP under Bindings

Reboot, give it a few minutes...network takes upto(they say 20+ minutes)
more like about 5, once the other machines can be accessed, Map the drive
for fast reconnect at login.

Many other ways to do this, this is just what worked best for me.

I did a test setup, and followed my own instructions, one reboot and within
a few minutes I could access either machine.
The only thing that may be stopping you is , are you using any type of
firewall? and Do you use a password to login to WinXP?

I have norton firewall but the home network wizard has
been run already and setup. The switch is a
switch/router which has a connection to a cable modem so
in a way that is also a firewall. I thought IPX was
internal anyways. No i don't use any password to logon
to either machine, just a user name (and i am clicking ok
and not cancel in case your wondering).

With various combinations of protocols (Need NetBeui) i
am able to access drives and shared folders both ways
through network neighbourhood but the game still doesn't
work (It is Warcraft 2). I am thinking that there is
something wrong with the game when run on XP although it
seems to run fine other than the multiplayer facet. I
have seen many forums with the same question posed but no
real solution. Maybe there isn't any. I think i might
just have to install win 98 on a separate partition on
the XP machine and use it when i want to play the game.

Thanks heaps for your efforts,
Jesse
