Hi!
I know this is borderline of being within the topic of the group. But I
think there could be a hardware malfunction issue...which is a generic
problem I don't really trust what people say in all these forums that
are around about things like iPods..

Background:
I fell for the hype and got an iPod nano 4GB about a year ago when they
first came out. I practically only use it when I go running, a few of
times a week. I had no problem at all with it up until recently.

A while back when I was out running with the iPod, it started 'raining
cats and dogs' -absolutely pouring down.
I got completely soaked and was miles from home, so there was no way of
taking shelter or waiting it out. The iPod got soaked too but continued
to work because I had it in an arm-case.

I eventually made it home and after a while I decided to connect the
iPod to the PC using the USB <> iPod connector as usual..
The iPod wasn't entirely dry, but I didn't stop to think about that.

Something strange happened when I connected the iPod. There was some
funny 'pop' noise that I didn't recognise, I got the feeling something
hardware-related broke. Then popped up a message saying 'cannot read
this device" or something like that. I thought "gosh I broke it"

I read up a bit and eventually managed to re-install the iPods OS. This
meant the iPod could get recognised again.

I had to buy a separate charger (not connected to my PC) as the battery
on the iPod had gone flat and could not be charged via the PC anymore...
(I don't understand how that happened and why! )

I bought another iPod<>USB connector because I thought the old one was
broken. I still cannot charge with this, although it always recognises
the iPod, which the old cable had stopped doing.

I re installed everything on the iPod... but then the problem happened
again! I had to re-install the OS and all the content again.

Recently I got a message from Windows about running a CHKdsk on the
iPod. I did that and let it correct some errors.

And now it just happened AGAIN !! ITunes and Winamp cannot recognise
the iPod which means I cannot update the iPod. This time I can see the
iPod in Win Explorer though - and all the music in raw format (re-named
mp3s) in funnily named directories.

I can't make sense of any of this. What could be going on? What should I
do?

Hi Jo,

My daughter's iPOD died twice. Each time it happened I went onto the Apple
site and got an RMA number. They collect your old unit for repair\
replacement.

I'm not a big fan of Apple MACs etc but I can't fault their returns system.

Too much hardware is "foreign market" now. My
lab is just piled with the junk, and I can tell that
a lot of so-called NEW is actually refurb. Also,
I'm getting a lot of double talk .. or even just being
ignored when trying to RMA a broken product.
USA needs to get back into the business of making
its own products. We were good at it, and I could
almost get a year or more service out of American
made computers. About 10% of these foreign
products are broke right out of the box. Also, I
notice that the "accents" at tech support are
gone. Looks like we are learning a good lesson.

Lol, okay but please, please give up on the cars! Woops you already have...

Thanks for responding.. I guess this is a difficult problem to say much
about.
Good to hear that you had good experience with the returns at Apple.
I'll simply do that if the problem continues.

The iPod is working again, but there is something fishy about it.
Strange inexpliccable things are happening when I use it.

Ipods are convenient to use, and stylish. I like the way you can set
iTunes to automaticcally download the latest version of a podcasts onto
the iPod. If I can find another combo that can do that, I'll change make
next time I upgrade my mp3 player.
(Not sure how much of the price of iPods is simply a premium for having
the most sought-after brand, and paying for their advertising. )

I know what you mean about products made in SE Asia. Seems to be the way
things are going though. I suppose the products would be a lot more
expensive if made locally. I became a big EU supporter after having
spent time in that South East Asia and realised how rapidly these
countries were moving forward, partly in the area of tech. The education
there is excllent as well. It seemed to me they'd run the world in 20
years unless the rest of us get organised and start keeping up! Very few
Euro countries can compete on their own, certainly not Sweden where I
come from (but live in the UK now).
