ipconfig /renew doesn't work

I used a Linksys wpc54g network adapter card successfully
for a couple of weeks at home and at work. Suddenly the
card won't allow me to access the networks either at home
or at work. Use IDs were never implemented,so they're not
the issue. The card is recognized by the systems. I'm
using dynamic IP addressing.

The ipconfig command returns a private IP address (non-
network), but the ipconfig /renew command times out
without renewing the address. I've changed the card,
problem still is there. I've reloaded the drivers several
times, re-installed XP Pro, and nothing helps. Connecting
an ethernet cable works fine.

Windows and Linksys FAQs and searches have gotten me
nowhere. The problem isn't listed anywhere.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Peter,

sorry for not knowing the Linksys product range by heart.
Perhaps you could mention what kind of network the wpc54g
connects to.

What exactly do you mean by that? I can't understand that last
sentence.

Depending on the clarifications I may or may not be able to give
an answer, so please don't be surprised if I don't reply. But if
not me, others may be able to help.

The wpc54g is a pcmcia wireless network adapter. At home
it connects to a linksys router. "Suddenly stops working"
means that it suddenly cannot connect to the internet or
recognize the other computers on the network. The card
fuctions properly in that it is recognized as such by the
laptop, but doesn't work.

Checking ipconfig, I get 169...
ipconfig /all works and gives me all of the details
required except for the netowrk ip addresses.
ipconfig /refresh and /renew do nothing. I eventually get
a timeout.

I've changed cards, reinstalled XP Pro, reinstalled
TCPIP, uninstalled and reinstall the drivers, tried
static addressing using the same addresses that the
network cable connection works with. the cable connection
works, the wireless doesn't. I've tried every suggestion
that I've read in this group, and nothing has worked.
Linksys insists its card is fine. Microsoft solutions
have been tried for other ipconfig related problems.
Nothing works.

Help, please?

Peter,

perhaps the wireless connection simply doesn't work reliably. Do
you have any tools to test that?

For a simple try, put the computer next to the router to make
sure the wireless connection is not hampered by any distortion.
Still, the transmitter or the adapter in the computer could be
defective.

That's an APIPA address which Windows automatically assumes when
it cannot reach the DHCP server, which, in your case, is in the
router.

The computer cannot reach the router (or, at least, cannot reach
the DHCP server in the router).

Please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm for
a list of other possible causes.
