I tried all known remedies -- repair reinstall, SFC, ip

Anyone there with other ideas?

I suspect that you have read this link:
http://www.techwarelabs.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=3131

Give us some more info:
type of nic card (I bet it's wireless)
operating system
router or not
dhcp source

Your link game me a "topic not available"

Dave,

Yes -- that is the URL I was referring to. My wireless
card (Linksys v4) 'works' OK -- that is to say that the
access point is accessible, and WEP appears to be working.
Dial-up fails with error message 633 (was 720 before some
repair attempts that wiped all hardware enumerations and
started over).

I suspect that the TCPIP stack is corrupted but cannot,
even with Microsoft's 'technical support' find where or
how to restore.

Ping 127.0.0.1 now works but ipconfig still fails. There
are several error messages in the event log (can't send
them here) and many relate to being unable to initialise
ports at boot time.

This is the initial report:
"Problem Description: This problem occurs on a Dell
Insprion 800 laptop computer. The version of Windows XP
was completely update-to-date with all patches. Network
firewall (Zone Alarm Pro) and anti-virus software (Norton)
was always installed and active. During recent business
trip with the laptop computer, many not fatal disk errors
were encountered. At boot time two hours was necessary for
a complete, successful, disk surface scan. Many blocks
were reported as being 'moved' by Windows. Eventually all
networking capability stopped. At present the operating
system executes, except for any type of networking. I
performed several remedial actions based on Microsoft
knowledge base articles, including "netsh int ip reset". I
deinstalled the network adaptors several times.
Error codes returned now are:
Attempt to connect using the dialer "code 720"
Ping 127.0.0.1 message "Unable to contact IP driver, error
code 2."
Ipconfig /all message "An internal error occurred: the
request is not supported"

I have almost the exact same problem except that I have a DLink card.
I did a chkdsk yesterday and seem to be having the problem since.

I tried connecting to a network through a network cable and it doesnt
work either. PLEASE PLEASE let me know if anyone gets this problem
fixed.

thanks
Steve Gomes

Tcpip.sys corrupted

we had this prolem at work, and discovered that the tcpip.sys file in c:\windows\system32\drivers was corrupted. we copied and replaced the same file from another computer, rebooted the computer. You may have to input the IP address and settings if you were using static IP.

It didn't matter that if the other PC was the same or not, just as long as the operating systems were the same.

tcpip.sys download.

I cannot say that its safe to replace yours.. But if you are desperate for one that worked for me(YOU NEED TO RESTART AFTER... If you are lazy to restart try shutdown -f then..):

It looks like screwing up tcpip.sys FRIES WebClient Service needed for the internet.

I had the same problem. Deleted c:\windows\system32\drivers it worked.
Before
ping 127.0.0.1 wouldn't work
my wireless said "ASSOCIATING"
and internet explorer said the adress type is invalid and showed me some /// stuff.
On a dell inspiron 6400.
This was due to BITCOMET which created a tcpip.sys.ORIGINAL..Just for those of you in DANGEROUS SITUATIONS, where you only have 1 computer I HIGHLY RECCOMEND you make a copy of tcpip.sys in c:\ so that if you ever have this problem again you can easily fix it

So in Summary
===========================
Problem
-Internet not working.

Symptoms with wireless on my Dell inspiron 6400
  • Having BitComet ..or other tormenting problems installed..and changing the IP Configuration settings there
  • Associated shows in my tray icon
  • Ipconfig fails
  • Ping 127.0.0.1 fails
  • ipconfig results in :ipconfig
    --------------------------------
    Windows IP Configuration
An internal error occurred: The request is not supported.
Additional Information: Unable to query routing
    information.
  • WebClient service said "stopping" in services.msc and A LOT of my web services and services failed to start properly!
  • My tray icon showed connectivity and yet the internet didn't work.
  • Ping 127.0.0.1 message "Unable to contact IP driver, error
    code 2."
Solution (as per the previous poster)

1) replace tcpip.sys
2) restart your computer
