IP resolving incorrectly

I have a PC on my network whose IP is not resolving
correctly. When I ping 'computername' I get the IP of
another computer on my network. When I try to look at at
this first computer in Server Manager, I am told that a
duplicate name exists on the network. But the other
computer that the IP is resolving to has a different
computer name.
When I run ipconfig on the first computer itself, I am
given the correct IP, and I can connect to this computer
directly through this correct IP but I would like to
connect through the computer name.
Can anyone suggest what the problem is and how I can fix
it?
Thanks

Are you running WINS? We had that problem on an NT 4.0
domain with multiple WINS servers. We found a corrupt WINS
database. I have also seen this happen when a WINS server
is not replicating on a regular interval and when it does
replicate it replicated the old PC name with the IP.

Bad DNS entry, bad HOSTS/LMHOSTS entry or corrupt WINS database.
Dumping the WINS database is likely the easiest try, but looking
through your DNS for the IP and/or host name, as well as renaming
HOSTS/LMHOSTS files wouldn't take long either. Possibly simply
rebooting the offending systems or purging the name caches on them
would fix it.
