Hello,

Im having difficulty with Multicasting. Im using a
Windows 2000 machine and trying to multicast across my
network. The problem is My Windows 2000 Advanced Server
does not recognize the message sent by the Windows 2000
desktop. Does anyone know what might cause this? Please
help!! Thank you!

Thank you for the help!

When I try to set up the RRAS, tere are 5 options. VPN,
Remopte Access Server, Internet Connection Server, etc..
I believe the user wants to broadcast messages from one
machine to a couple other machines. Which option would I
select?

Here is the message I got from my user..

Mike :

I am trying to work on WebLogic's cluster feature, which
internally uses multicasting.
In order to test the weblogic feature, I had a test
program which tests the Multicast messages.
I ran this program on two machines (both are win 2K) with
IP 237.0.0.1, port 7777, none of the machine are able to
identify/receive the messages from each other.
However, when I tried the same test program on SunFire
(Solaris) and My machine(win 2k), sun fire was able to
identify my machine and received the messages. But my
machine is not able to receive the messages sent by
Sunfire.

I understood , to test the program both machines should be
on same subnet, I have checked this on windows machines,
they are on same subnet. Still it doesn't work here.
(Same program has been working perfectly in INDIA
network. !). Then I came to a conclusion our network has
problem!

You can use Netmon (available with Win2k) to sniff the network on Windows
machine to find out whether Win2k machine is recieving multicast packets or
not.
If it is not recieving packets then problem could be with multicast source
or network? If it is recieving the packets then problem is with application
listening to multicast traffic on your Win2k machine.

Hope it helps.

How would I go about troubleshooting either option?

It doesnt look like the packets are being sent from the
one machine to the other..

What componets in Windows do I need to check are installed?

Any ideas at all from the ground up...

Can you tell in detail what are you trying to achieve?

If you are trying to create any multicast application then look at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?
url=/library/en-
us/wcecomm/html/_wcesdk_creating_an_ip_multicast_applicatio
n.asp
If you want to look at how to configure RRAS for IGMP:

url=/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/intnetwk/pa
rt1/intch02.asp

We tested the application on another machine and it
worked. There must be an issue with the other machine
itself and how it is configured. Any ideas where I might
look on the settings of that machine?
