Hello all.

I am having a major issue with a DNS lookup on my computer, to
my web address. About a week ago, I changed the DNS entries to point
to a new web host -- but my primary computer still points to the old
IP address.
Is there an internal DNS caching system in WindowsXP that
could be causing me to continue to lookup to old IP address instead of
the new one?

To create the trouble, confusion and outright anger I am
having over this situation, I know it's a local problem.
I can go to work and call up my web site, which points to the
new IP; no trouble. A friend on the same ISP can call up my new web
site. Even I can... on a different computer!
My primary computer, WindowsXP, refuses to call up the proper
site. However, I have a Windows 2000 Server which finds the new site
(IP address) just fine. Both are hooked up to the same network
connection via a router.
To kick me while I'm done... the problem suddenly fixed itself
earlier today. I thought "great! I don't know what I did, but it is
working!" It worked... up until I rebooted my computer -- at which
point everything started pointing to the old IP address again.

I really hope someone out there can shed some light on this.
I am to the point where my next attempt will be the master fix of
"format and reinstall" of Windows.

Two possibilities I can think of, if this is meant to be a home page, you
may have been hijacked:

First run a virus scan.

Second, download, install and run the following:
Ad Aware: www.lavasoftusa.com

Check the following site, click the "H" at the top of the page and scroll to
"Home Page Hijacking." Note, you may have to maximize the window in order
to see the alphabet at the top of the page:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Second possibility, if you've been fooling around with the hosts file or
made any changes there, it's possible the Hosts file is the source of the
issue.

Thanks Michael,

I actually found out the cause shortly after I posted the
message (isn't that always the way). :P
The primary DNS my ISP was setting via the DHCP does not have
an updated entry; but the second and third DNS entries are up-to-date,
which explains my "it worked for 5 minutes" episode. I've added the
DNS entries as static entries and forced the lookup order to avoid the
first server.
Thanks for the suggestions though. I had been meaning to give
Ad Aware a try... thanks for reminding me. :) Thankfully, only Gator
is creaping around the system.

Thanks for the information. Glad you got it worked out.

Dunno. I'll stay tuned to her the answer...

What is it with you dudes and chainsaws?

I'd start by purging IE's web cache, history, offline folders and all
online content, and then try finding and renaming away any files
called "HOSTS" (exactly that name; no extension). I'd also try things
other than IE; Ping, Netscape, that sort of thing.
