IP Conflict Preventing Network Access

I have a home network through a linksys router. 2 Vista m/c, 1 XP. Recently
returned from vacation where all m/c's were turned off. Now 1 Vista m/c
tells me it has a conflict with another computer on the network with the same
IP address. Nothing has changed but this error is brand new. Any ideas?
 
Do any of your computers use a static IP address? It sounds like the answer
may be yes and you've specified a static IP address that is in the scope of
your DHCP server (Linksys router). If this is the case then look at the
scope (range of IP addresses) that the Linksys reserves for DHCP and
configure the computer with the static IP to use an address outside of that
range. With most Linksys routers the static IP should be in the range
192.168.1.2 to 192.168.192.99. The Router itself uses 192.168.1.1 and
addresses from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.254 for DHCP.
 
thanks, I went into the linksys console and changed the starting IP address
for the DCHP, that seemed to do the trick, any idea why that occurred, not
sure how changing the starting address eliminates the conflict.
 
It has taken the IP address of whatever computer is using a static IP
address out of the DHCP scope. What was happening was a computer was set
with a static IP address. The Linksys router has no idea this has been done.
It will happily give another computer that same address and thus the
conflict. If you have not set a static IP address on any of your computers
then you should investigate this further. If this is a wireless router
someone else may be connecting to your network. Did you set a static IP
address on any of your computers?
 
I double checked and all PC's are set up for IP address automatically and my
wireless has securtiy enabled, this happened only after we returned from a
vacation and all PC's were shut down during this time
 
Most routers have a screen in the administration console where you can see
what computers are connected to the wireless. I'd check to make sure that
only yours are connected. I'd also change the router setup password and the
wireless security key/password. It may just be that it was a glitch with the
DHCP server on the router or one of the computers but I'd take some
precautions just in case.
