Hi.

I have set up a test server with a static ip address,
before I assigned this static address, the server used
have an ip automatically assisgned to it.

Now with the static ip in place, i can logg into the
domain via the server ok and can see the network
neighbourhood, however when I try to view the test machine
via a client using the network neighbourhood it says that
the network path cannot be found

I have also pinged the testserver via cmd (from a cliant
machine) and it is timing out and it it seems to be trying
to ping an ip address that is not that of the test server,
does anyone have any ideas whay this is happening and how
do I resolve this

help would be appreciated on this one!!!!

Regards

Vincent

Sounds like a DNS issue - where is your DNS server search order going to -
internally or externally?

Paul.

As as I know the dns search a local table on the dns
server and then if it can't resolve it goeas to a BT
server to resolve IP addresses, is the dns not used to
resolve ip' to domain names, the problem i'm having is the
internal ip's within my domain!!

Yes but the fact that you failed to ping a host name correctly from a client
points in the DNS setup

I would check to see what the DNS server your client is trying to access.
If this is internal, check your DNS database and in particular host
addresses.

Paul

Hi again paul,

All of my client pc's are accessing the same internal dns
server and so are my testservers, is there a quick way of
checking host addressess!!

thanks

Ok, have you checked your internal DNS server to make sure that the host
record matches the exact IP address?

Paul.

Hi

ok my host records show lexserver1 through to lexserver6
with each one having a satic ip address, so are you
suggesting that I add a host record for my testserver as
well
