You can't and don't want to do this. If you do this, your computer
won't be on the network, and your connection to the internet won't work.
How do you think web servers would return web pages to you if the
machine doesn't know to what IP address to send them to?

You've probably seen one of those pop-up messages warning you that your
IP address is being broadcast to the Internet and is a security risk?
It's a scam.

You are right to worry about security on the internet. The big issues are:

1. use a firewall (hardware or software)
2. eliminate pop-up's with pop-up eliminator software (I like the new
Google toolbar as it's simple, works, free, and has added functionality
.... I also like Mozilla as it has pop-up elimination capability)
3. use anti-virus software
4. be warry of email attachments, especially if they appear to be from
Microsoft (there is a huge scam going on right now in the email world).

Chris,
as Rob wrote sending IP is part of Internet Protocol and you can't stop it,
but you can disable pinging your machine. It could be done by installing
FireWall as Rob wrote (I rcomend it also), but there is the simplest
method - using IPSEC (IP Security) mechanism implemented in Windows.
Unfortunately I use to use polish version of XP, so I can not provide you
step by step. Choose Run from start menu and type "mmc". In opened console
use shortcut (Ctrl+M) to add new... and now I don't know how it is called in
english. Mainly you have to estblish a rule with filter which stops ICMP
traffic. Sorry, but, as I said before I can't explain it with more details.
Maybe some one else can help.
