If I have somebody IP address, how can I find whose is it,
and what can I find, his PC name, ISP ... ?
Any command from DOS ?
I use "Active Ports", but it's not exactly for that purpose.

If the person is connected via an ISP you can only get the identity of the ISP I
think. That is, the ISP screens for such intrusions.

Opening a DOS window and typing: "tracert IP#" will track back to the ISP, or to
the registration name for anyone with a static IP address.

Try: "tracert 63.151.1.93" if you're still here and see if you can discover my
machine name. I don't think you can, but I might be wrong.

Only up to 1.247 You must be behind a firewall.

Yes, two really. The XP firewall and Kerio 2.1.5.

I had thought that even without a firewall if configured properly the machine
wouldn't give out anything. Or, the ISP temp user IP would be as far as tracert
would take you. I might be wrong about that though. IE: user-93-1.inu.net
I'm using a new setup and I haven't checked my MS network settings yet.

At any rate, I recommend a good firewall on anything that connects to the
internet! The XP firewall is not sufficient. Kerio 2.1.5 rocks!

You can only look as far as the actual ISP who owns the domain.

WhoIsView is freeware that does the job perfectly. Gives you all the details including where to
send abuse emails.

422kB for the full installer, 300kB for just the executable program (works perfect - just
doesn't add icons to your desktop etc).

Sam Spade is freeware, and will do 'almost' any search of this nature
you need... http://www.samspade.org/ssw/

Well, just FYI, my traceroute made it all the way to your IP
address. Do I get a prize? ;-)

What OS? Win2K and XP have nslookup available from command line.
Nslookup on the IP will give the reverse DNS of the IP which may or
may not be helpful.

typical results:

Name: cs2417548-83.austin.rr.com
Address: 24.175.48.83

For a typical home user, this doesn't reveal PC name but rather the
name the ISP has assigned to the IP the user has leased at the moment.
I don't think you can get PC name unless you actually manage to
connect to the PC first. I'm not 100% certain on that and would
welcome a correction if I am wrong.

Hey! Waid -a-minute! I gave the IP as a starting point. Get back in line. <G>

You nearly got me there. Did you get a user IP like: user-93-1.inu.net?

Yup, it gave me that one. Currently it doesn't work anymore though...
