My desktop pc is suddenly unable to get an IP address from
my router. When I boot the pc it shows that it is
connected to the router but has the ip address of 0.0.0.0
and I cannot ping the router. I have check the router by
using my laptop and that works fine. I have also tried
changing the ethernet card but that makes no difference.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Barry

I have now uninstalled and reinstalled TCP/IP but I can't
get the router to assign an IP now in the usual range
(192.168....) the pc has a 169.254... number and still
can't ping the router (At least it has an IP now!) is
there another step I should be doing after the TCP/IP
reinstall?

Hello,

what operating system are you running?
Are you up to date with the latest patches?

Do you have a personal firewall installed?
Are any other computers able to get an ip address from the router?

The 169.254.x.x ip address is one that is automatically assigned to
you when a DHCP enabled computer can't communicate with a DHCP
server.

If at first you don't succeed, forget skydiving

replace the network card.
or take out the network card and put it in a differenct pci slot.
