IP address zapping

Why is it when I install an IEEE 1394 card that the IP
address of my ISP gets zapped and I cannot connect to the
Internet or Outlook Express? Same thing happens with the
Pinnacle Lynx USB cable. Only way to correct the problem
is to restore to a previous checkpoint. Is this XP's
bug? Friend has Windows Millenium w/IEEE 1394 and has no
trouble at all...Very frustrating.

It's because XP classes firewire as another
network card. Go to My Network Places
View network connections. Right mouse
on the Firewire icon/properties/Internet
Protocol/TCP/IP and select obtain an IP
automatically. And obtain DNS server
address automatically.

And under the Alternate config, select
Automatic Private IP address.

See if that stops things clashing.

I have a 4 port PCI firewire card here,
and thats how I've configured this card.

Seems to work a OK.

Also, on your dialup icon/properties/Networking
/TCP/IP/Properties, is the top option selected?

And is obtain DNS server address automatically
selected? On XP, (if you're on dialup). It doesnt
need an ip address in the above tab.
