IP Address resets in Standby or Hibernate

B

Brandon

When my laptop goes into standby or hibernate mode, my IP
address resets. I use a router (DHCP server) so my normal
IP address is 192.168.0.XXX, but coming out of standby it
changes to 0.0.0.0 and out of hibernate it goes to
169.x.x.x. I have tried everything and have even
contacted the laptop manufacturer. I have installed the
latest drivers. Is there anything else I can do?

Have you tried either repairing the connection in Network Places, or opening
up a command prompt and typing IPCONFIG /RENEW when this happens?

B

Brandon

Yes, I have tried repairing the connection and the
ipconfig /renew just freezes up. One other note, is if I
restart the computer once the IP configuration is reset
from standby or hibernate, my network address is correct
192.168.0.xxx. Isn't it true that I should not have to
restart the computer to get back onto the network?

In theory, yes. In reality it depends on the hardware and drivers involved.

Let's try a longshot here - open up Device Manager (right-click My Computer,
select the hardware tab, then the Device Manager tab) and find your network
adapter, double-click it to open the Properties page. On the Power
Management tab you should have an option to let the system power the device
down - un-check that box, exit back out. Does that help?

I tried unchecking the box, and put the laptop into
standby. The first time I came out of standby my network
connection was good and IP was 192.168.0.xxx, but I lost
the internet connection (could not detect proxy settings,
Internet explorer not responding). Tried to restart the
laptop but now there were errors with the desktop (blank
desktop, no task bar...). Booted back up, everything is
fine. Went back into standby and came back, lost the NIC
altogether. The computer said it did not exist. Tried
to enable, and it will not. Had to restart to get back
on network, everything is working again except still have
original problem.

Whew - I surely wasn't expecting that kind of trouble from that setting.
Sorry. Is this the network adapter that came with the laptop or is this an
add-on device?

Currently I am using a Broadcom 54g MaxPerformance
802.11g wireless interface. It is built into the laptop
so yes it came with the laptop. I have the same problem
with the National Semiconductor Corp. DP 83815/816 10/100
Lan card. This also came with the Laptop and is
integrated. Since the problem is with both cards, I
don't think it is a problem (drivers) with the NICs but
maybe some settings in windows.

By the way, thank you for quick responses.

Disable the network connection before going into Standby or Hibernate.
Enable the network connection when the computer comes back up.

It's quite common for network card driver programs and/or hardware to
have trouble with Standby or Hibernate.

Brandon,

How about installing the latest firmware on your router?
I had the same problem on a d-link di624 wireless router
and when I installed the latest firmware the problem went
away.

If you still have the problem then you could do one of
the following; 1) Install a pcmcia nic and disable the
onboard nic on your motherboard 2) Place a renew.bat file
on your desktop with ipconfig /renew and double-click on
that when your system comes out of standby/hibernate 3)
Turn-off standby/hibernate within the power applet in the
control panel so your computer never goes into one of
these modes.
