IP address good, IE6 will not find any websites

Out of the blue Internet Explorer from XP Pro will not
access the internet. Prior to this I had not added any new
software or updates. However one day (August 8) after
logging on to XP I noticed that Norton personal Firewall
had been disabled without my knowledge and junk was poping
up all over the place. I enabled the firewall and did a
full virus scan with none found. Since then I have not
been able to load a page on IE browser or access the
internet in any fashion from XP. My ISP can see me, Kazza
users are connecting but nothing I do allows my browser,
outlook or any software to access the internet. XP
diagnostics tells me that the IP address has failed. My
ISP can see me connected (cable).

Now the interesting part. I am using Partition Magic Boot
Magic with 3 bootable partitions. I have 98 on one, Win2k
on another and XP Pro on the third. Only XP will not
access the internet and the other two which connect just
fine are using the exact IP address that XP tells me has
failed. I have used XP networking to repair the connection
with no luck. I have done everything I can think of to
refresh the network connections.

I would rather not reinstall XP but am getting close to
having no choice.

Anyone have any ideas?

Go to the Norton control panel and deselect email scanning, popup stopping
and the firewall. I am not familiar with the actual commands... sorry.

Try IE again, if still no good go tools>options>connections tab and hit the
button marked LAN Settings.

Check the "Proxy Server" settings and note whatever is there, then uncheck
the box so no Proxy server is used.

Close IE and then try it again. If it works now Norton is the problem...
ties in nicely with the disabling itself problem eh?

If that does work then you can eliminate the Norton options causing it by
trial and error.
