I'm using a cable provider for internet access. My IP address has somehow
been corrupted and I can not repair. The Cable company sent me to Microsoft
support. They could not help or tell me how to fix the corrupted IP address
and told me to go back to the cable provider. I'm now in a tight loop of
finger pointing with no help from either side. Does any one know how to fix
this problem or do I have to do a complete reinstall of the entire system.
I'm running XP home edition on a Gateway computer w/364 meg

What do you mean "corrupted IP address"? Please tell us exactly what you
mean by this. If you don't have Internet access and the cable company
says all is fine on their end, here are a few troubleshooting steps:

1. Make sure your computer is 100% virus/malware free:

2. If you removed malware previously, you may need to rebuild the TCP/IP
stack. If you have XP SP2 do

Start>Run>cmd [enter]
netsh winsock reset catalog [enter]
Reboot

If you don't have SP2, get WinsockXPFix.exe:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

3. If this isn't a malware situation, check the network card. Is the
green light on?

4. If this all seems too difficult, call a professional computer repair
person and have them check it out and fix it.

Hello Malke, thanks for the reply. I'll try your suggestion.

What I mean by corrupted IP addres is it should be all numbers. The IP
Address I have is "fe80:5445:5245:444f%5". My service provider and Microsoft
told me this is an invalid IP Address but they provided no help as to getting
rid of it. They both told me the IP address should be automatically loaded
when I boot up and it should be numbers only....no letters or special
characters.....does that make more sense???

I'm just an every day user, not a PC guy or programmer

If you can run the command ipconfig /all on your computer in a command
window [cmd in the run box] and post the results here in a reply. If you
right click in the command window you will see the edit options where you
can select all, then hit enter to copy, and paste in a reply. --- Steve

Somehow, a protocol you don't need, IPv6, was installed on your
computer. Here's how to uninstall it:

To Uninstall IPv6 Using the Network Connections Folder
1.Click Start.
2.Click Control Panel and then double-click Network
Connections.
3.Right-click any local area connection, and then click
Properties.
4. Click Microsoft IPv6 Developer Edition in the list of
installed components, and then click Uninstall.
5.Restart the computer.

Good luck
